grandstadecasa.jpgCasablanca, Jan. 8 – The Moroccan government has earmarked USD 260Mn to build a new 70,000-seat stadium in Casablanca, the largest stadium in Morocco, Youth and Sports minister, Nawal El Moutawakil, revealed on Tuesday.

The stadium to be built on 60ha, will include a warm-up pitch and various facilities to host soccer and athletics events, Ms. El Moutawakil said, underlining that Mohammed V Stadium will continue to host sports events.

The stadium, to open in 2013, is part of a USD-600Mn program that aims at stepping up the works at the stadiums of Tangiers, Marrakech and Agadir. The three stadiums, which will be operational by 2010, will have a capacity of 45,000 seats each.

Yesterday, king Mohammed VI chaired the signing ceremony of the agreement framing this program, which is meant to endow Moroccan sports with modern infrastructure that meet international standards in order to make sports a vector of human development.
